What hoarding cleanup covers
Hoarding cleanup is a different job from a regular junk haul. It usually starts with an assessment of the property, then sorting through belongings item by item (not just shoveling everything into a truck), separating what stays, what gets donated, and what's disposed of. Many jobs also involve biohazard concerns: pest infestation, mold, rotted food, animal waste, or structural damage hidden under years of accumulated items. A proper crew will bag and remove trash, deep clean affected rooms, and in some cases coordinate with pest control or a contractor for repairs. It's slow, physical work that has to be done carefully, both for safety and because the person living there (or their family) is often making difficult decisions about what to keep.
What to look for before hiring
Ask whether the company has specific hoarding experience, not just general junk removal, since the pacing and communication style needed are different. Check that they carry proper insurance for biohazard and structural work, that they give a written estimate after seeing the space (in person or by video, not just a phone quote), and that they explain how they handle sorting decisions and donations. Discretion matters too. Unmarked trucks and non-judgmental crews are common requests for a reason.
